To work as a teaching assistant no qualifications are needed BUT to have NVQs would be an advantage, some schools sponser training. Child care qualification can be an advantage eg a nursery nurse qualification if working in a primary school. Maths and English certificates at Level 2 may be required. Experience and good references are an advantage.

It depends on what you want to do at a school. If you wish to be a teacher you need a teaching degree which takes a minimum of one year (for a graduate) or three-four years. If you want to teach at an independent school you do not need to have any teaching qualifications (something independent schools rarely tell their fee-paying parents...).
If you want to be a teaching assistant (TA) you do not need any qualifications, simply enthusiasm and patience. Obviously your pay will be significantly lower than the teacher you are supporting, but then many TAs go on to train as teachers later in life.
