My question is what is the actual mutation that happens during colorblindness or what is altered to make someone colorblind? I know its on the X chromosome.

I'm not a biologist, but it can be caused by point mutation, a major sequence deletion or (unequal) crossing overs. This are all normal gene mutations.

It is described in detail in the paper called Opsin genes, cone photopigments, color vision and color blindness (see source link).
