The problem with buying sailing-related things is, he's probably already gotten himself the things he wants, and being into it, knows what the best things are, better than you guys do.

One idea might be to have everyone sign a big paper, with little messages, and have it framed under glass.

In this case, it seems that something that explicitly tells him how you feel, and will always remind him of those feelings is best.

The trophy idea is another such idea.

An ephemeral thing (tickets, or food or drink) seems less appropriate. You do want to go for the effect of his being reminded how much you all appreciated his great-boss-itude.

(I mean, a great boss makes SUCH a difference in one's quality of life -- rewarding him with life-long warm fuzzies is a Very Nice Thing to do.)

Go and buy him a trophy for sailing, have engraved on the plate below.........".To the best boss in the world...We will miss you....Enjoy your sailing.".........If he doesn't shed a tear...I will be very surprised..... They are all prices....I'm sure you could find one to suit your budget..........

How about a digital compass or some new waterproof clothing or a framed caricature drawing of him on board his boat/yacht/dinghy
