That's a famous one. I think it was michealangelo who would stare and stare at the canvas for months and months before laying a single stroke, thinking about the piece in his head. Then, when he hit the epiphony, he quickly did the painting within a few hours and it was a masterpiece. The moral is that no matter how "busy" an artist is, ultimately it is the planning and the thinking process which makes the work. He was making a statement that Artists were meant to procrastinate, that it leads to a better piece. It's in stark contrast to those people who say "you're an artist, eh? Well, I dont SEE you painting NOW!" who claim all artists are lazy.

The distinction between the brain and hands sounds to me like there is an intellectual or emotional quality to the artwork as opposed to merely copying something.

I had an art teacher that always told us that all the greatest works of art including literature had an emotional quality to them. The artist was conveying how they felt. This is why people feel so connected to a particular piece of artwork

It means that you must think about what it is that you are going to do and actually be able to see it. You must have a vision, before completion. If you are to paint a picture or simple type a paper, you must have already seen it in your head before you paint or type. That's what is meant by "paint with your brain and not your hands.

It's saying that painting is a mental process and not a physical one. It's obviously not talking about painting a house, but rather true art. Can your hands really do anything without your brain telling them what to do?

It means that the hands are merely the tools that he uses to express the creative thoughts in his mind. If he envisions an image that can be put on canvas or paper using his hands but they are not the source of his inspiration.

The vision is inside the man's head, inside his brain/imagination. His hands are merely the mechanism that illustrates his internal vision.

Art comes from the mind. A person imagines and visualizes what he will produce on paper. Everything starts from the mind.

I think it means that before someone can create something out of some sort of material, he needs to have it created in his mind. I think it all has to do with the use of the imagination.

It is the memory and values that guide our hands, not the muscles and bones attached thereto.

Genius is the result of a life fully lived, and if you want to see its fruits, go to the Vatican.

You picture what it is in your brain and set your mind to it and your brain moves your hands. If you can't picture it in your mind you can't paint it.
