Do you really want to know what's the best for soothing your sore nipples? Well, don't use any cream or lotion or nothing but your own milk!!! After you nurse your baby, rub some of the left milk around the nipple and let it dry. Human milk is the best!!! My breastfeeding counselor told me to do so, and was the best thing that worked for me.

You can try Lanisoh. It's pretty expensive, but it seemed to work all right. The best thing I did was wear a sport bra. I drank plenty of water to make sure I was hydrated too. Also, be sure that the baby is latching correctly. There's nothing more uncomfortable - for mom and baby - than an incorrect latch. Also, if you are having burning and itching, you may be developing thrush. It's common with nursing mothers, but you'll want to make sure you get a nystatin prescription from the doc for you and baby if that's the case.

I had the same problem. Sometimes you just need to give your nipples a break. I pump when they are really sore and just give my baby a bottle of breastmilk instead. It really makes a difference on my nipples and I'm not cutting my milk supply short. My baby doesn't have nipple confusion either, as long as she eats she doesn't care which nipple it comes from. Good luck!

First of all, make sure baby is latching on correctly. Poor latching can cause soreness. Make sure mouth is covering nipple completely and nose is touching breast. Always let breasts air dry after feeding and don't use soap directly on nipples when bathing. They also make certain creams for this. Some of the other answers will provide you w/names, because I don't know any.

Cool wash cloths applied after nursing. Palmer's also has a wonderful breast cream that soothes them, makes them soft and keeps them from drying out. Try and keep them moisturized as much as possible, always use creams or lotions that have NO ALCOHOL in them, it will drythem out even more, and cause chaffing and cracking. There is a wonderful nursing pad called "lily pads" they are AMAZING. Go to www.lilypadz.com. they are reusable, sterile and absolutely wonderful!!!! You clean them with soap and water, and even boiling them won' t hurt---and because they are silicone, they don't dry out your nipples. Hope that helps!

There is a great ointment out there that is safe for baby as well so you don't have to wash it off before you nurse. Its called Lanisoh and it comes in a purple tube. I had the same problem and it worked like a charm. Also Make sure that baby is latched on properly to limit the pain.

Sore nipples are usually an indication that something is wrong. Please, get help now from a lactation consultant or La Leche League before it gets worse. Breastfeeding should never be painful! I put some links at the bottom for you: how to find your local LLL, causes and cures for sore nipples, and some others. Good luck!

Air dry your nipples after feeding for about 10 minutes and then apply Lansolin cream.

I used the lansinol that they give you in the hospital if you are going to breast feed and all it did was make it worse. My sister in law who has 5 kids and breast-fed them told me that rubbing some of your breast milk after the baby eats, will aleviate the soreness because your breast milk has natural lanolin which is always better, and there are healing properties in your milk.
Won't clog the milk ducts, doesn't need to be cleaned off, and isn't harmful to you or your child.
I did it and it worked

Lanolin works great (Purelan, Lansinoh, etc.) They reccommended it at the hospital where I had my son (Cleveland Clinic) and it doesn't have to be wiped off before baby nurses. If that doesn't help, then you need to see the doc and make sure there isn't an infection or anything...
