No, he proclaimed him self a god. He was a persian king that went on a conquest to rule the world. He got pretty far, until he tried to invade Greece and the Spartans (along with 30,000 other Greeks). From what I remember, he was behead during the battle, by who I don't know! Go see the movie though, it's worth seeing.

Xerxes wasn't considered to be a God. But the Persian style of prostration was something Greeks performed only before statues of gods, and that caused the misunderstanding.

I believe the movie 300 is somehow political and wants to portrait Iranians(persians) as wild people.
