That would be an aquatic frog, most likely an African Dwarf. You can get them at most big pet stores, are they aren't too expensive. I have 4 right now, and they're just hilarious to watch. If you are thinking of getting one, read up on them first, because they aren't as easy to care for as goldfish or something of the like.

They are called African Dwarf Frogs.
Here is a care sheet
http://allaboutfrogs.org/info/mypets/dwarfs.html
Ask your local pet store, they often have them, they just don't have a specific tank for them as they are spread out among the tanks.. and often hard to see.
If they don't have them, they can probably order some.
Or you can check on-line with places like
Aquarium Fish.net

or

I'm sorry, I can't remember the names of the frogs, but I know for sure petsmart sells them..I used to have some myself.
Do note for your friend to keep the tank clean (partial water change often) and disease free as these little guys can sometimes be sensitive.
Also, they are bottom feeders so need a high protein bottom food such as bloodworms, shrimp etc.

When i was younger, if you go to the discovery store and any kids toy store, they have a kit where they have a tank and some rocks. It's really quite cool, and you mail the postacard, showing that you got the kit, and they send you a tadpole. You put him in his tank, and watch him grow. He grows into a really cute frog, that can live about 3-5 years. I did it twice, and i loved it. Here's a website to buy the kit if you are interested...

Look up frogs on the net and try to find one that looks like it or take a pic to your local pet store and you should be able to find out about it and where to get one.

First, look it up on the Internet. If you can't find out that way either call or go to your local pet store. They will help you, for sure. Sounds like your friend takes good care of the little guy!

African dwarf frogs, you can get them anywhere, at Petco or Petsmart, for about $3 each.
