No squeezing. Just shaking (to listen for loose seeds) & smelling. Works for me.

watermelon,gentle thump round yellow belly even shape,cantalope asweet smell at room temp,golden skin,stem should give a little,honeydew look for small yellow spots and smooth skin

Yes, and I always smell them also. If you smell where the vine detachted you can smell the ripeness.
