... you might mean "how important they WERE", they serve no real purpose nowadays. I dislike them for the same reason i dislike Paris Hilton- very few of them actually contribute to society in any way.

Scotland hates the Queen and most of the English due to the injustices bestowed up on them all throught out history. Which you really can not blame them for this either. It has not been until what the last 10 years that Scotland has been allowed to once again govern their own country without Brittish influence or rule? This is the same reason that America fought for their independence. Had America been closer to England would we have become a free country? I doubt it it didnt work for Scotland.
Catholics tend to dislike The Royal family becase throughout history their distruction and mayham was done in the name of the church for purification purposes. The Royal family has been mostly catholic alll through history with an occasional change that only lasted briefly.

Scots dislike Royalty because their tax dollars go to supporting them but yet it's the English that reap the vast majority of the benefits, Scotland receives very little in return. Most tourism dollars are spent in the London and Windsor areas.
Scots dislike the english because of past history....all you have to do is read a few history books to find out why...very interesting reading. There was a time that English "Lords" felt that on a Scot's wedding night, they had the right to "break in" the bride. It's been established through DNA projects that some Scottish blood has been tainted due to this English practice. Some brides became pregnant right away and before DNA nobody knew who the father was. Now we know that DNA proves some have english blood.
As far as catholics disliking Royalty, it has to do with the fact that Henry the 8th ended up breaking from the catholic church because he couldn't obtain a divorce (yet again) and he established his own "Church of England" (which oddly enough does not allow divorce now - except if your names are Charles or Camilla).

Liking or disliking is part of life & is not confined to either Scotland or Catholics. Perhaps its the institution that is disliked, although if your talking about Prince Charles I'll agree that he is disliked by many
