Actually now is a better time because in case they've overlooked you this ( a week later) is an opportunity to remind them of your interview.

Try to add some details to the "Thank You" that reminds them specifically of their interview with you.

I don't know when this trend of sending a thank you letter for an itnerview started but I think it's a bad idea. If I were a hiring manager and got one I'd find it odd. it smacks of "sucking face." Calling back several weeks later to inquire if the position is still open is much better. Shows you are keen about getting the job and followup on things. Both are excellent qualities. Usually the interviewer will give a date as to when they will make a decision. If they don't, ask for one. Often though, the decision takes longer than expected. I wait one week after the date and then call in. I think that makes a very favourable impression!
