what is the genotype represented by the open circles? By the filled circles?

If you are referring to how genotypes are inferred in a pedigree then:

The individual that is affected by the "mutant" or disease trait is filled in.

Circles stand for females, squares for males.

The are different ways in which diseases can be inherited.

If the disease is inherited autosomally recessive (ww) then those individuals with this genotype would have filled in cirles(squares).

If the disease is inherited autosomal dominant (WW or Ww) then those cirlces or squares are filled in.

The blank circles and squares are individuals that do not have the disease.

Really need more specifics and seeing what the pedigree looks like helps determine how the trait is inherited (autosomal dominant or recessive).

There are also X-linked traits that affect males more readily than females since males only have one X chromosome they only need one recessive (w) allele to have the disease.

Hope this helps.
