I'm in California and I'm looking for dance companies that dance modern and/or ballet. Nothing else. Please help. Thanks.

Lori, if your definition of a dead end dance style is based on the job market, then ballet is just as dead as modern. Many ballet companies have folded in the past few years while new modern companies are always being formed. The demand for dancers is low all around. That doesn't make a style "dead"!

I don't know of any big name companies that are having auditions right now. California Riverside Ballet just held auditions for it's spring performance on Feb. 24th and California Ballet holds theirs every summer for a full season with the company. But, supposedly, you can call and use a class time as an audition, I don't know if that is true or not.

Modern dance is usually a dead end. Outside of college, there just isn't a high demand for the performers. As a male, you have a better chance to get something than a female dancer would. Most large cities have multiple ballet companies in the area.

go to www.pointemagazine.com, they have tons of listings for summer intensives, dance auditions and other stuff. they range from classical ballet to modern dance. Just browse thru and you will definitely find what you're looking for.

you could look in the yellow pages under dance :) otherwise you could google it for dance companies in your area
