I'm for it.
Some reasons you could use:
1) Children of gay couples have less rights than children of straight couples because family laws don't adequately cover de factos and same sex couples
2) Under current laws if I fall in love I can get married, as long as it's to a man. I can't marry the person of my choice. The government thinks I am capable of having a loving, mature relationship (because it's legal for me to marry) but won't let me marry the person I want to have that relationship with
3) Supporting people who are trying to have loving, monogamous relationships is good for the structure of society and for family stability
4) Various financial reasons- get details from someone smarter than me
5) Only a spouse or family member has a say in medical procedures when a person is incapacitated. Sometimes a de facto partner isn't even allowed to visit if the patient is in a critical condition
6) The Universal Declaration of Human Rights includes the right to marry and have a family. This means EVERYBODY not just straight people. See here for details: http://web.amnesty.org/pages/aboutai-udhr-eng

There would be more I'm sure but those are the big ones I can think of. It'll help your essay if you know what the arguments AGAINST gay marriage are so you can include a rebuttal. This site mentions the main ones people use with brief reasons why they don't make sense to get you started:

I SUPPORT!!! There is absolutely no reason why gay people can't enjoy the same rights as straight couples. We work, we are productive members of society, we pay taxes. That alone entitles us to the same treatment. Not to mention how big a human rights violation it is to tell someone that they can't get married to the person that they love because that person just so happens to be of the same sex. Marriage is about love, not gender. Most of the countries in Europe allow at least same sex unions, as usual, America is behind the power curb. Those countries are not affected negatively by their decissions, why should America be any different. You can site the states that have already allowed gay marriage, and site statistics and how their economies are doing after the change. It will require a little bit of research, but it will be worth it. I promise. I hope this helps you.

I'm am totally for gay marriages. I see no problem with it. Gays, lesbians, transsexuals..etc are human too, they are allowed to love just like a heterosexual. They have rights just like we do, right? Well, some of us would like to believe so, but it so happens that the fight between homosexuals, and heterosexuals is becoming the new segregation of America. Gays can't do this, or they can't do that. Why? Just because they love someone. What is so wrong with loving someone? I wouldn't think anything is wrong with it. If you love someone, love them...no matter if they are of the same sex or opposite sex. Shouldn't everyone have the right to love, be loved, and to be happy?
Well, that's my opinion. Not sure if I've helped any or what, but I wanted to include my opinion on this topic.

I'm all for it!! Why should one group of people be told that they can't marry the one they love when you have some glbt people that have been together for year and years, then you have some people like Brittany Spears who have the right to just go get married and they run out and stay married for a few hours? And, not everyone has a religious ceremony. Many straight people get married at the JP. My partner and soon to be wife (when we go to Canada) had a minister bless a commitment ceremony for us. (There are glbt people who are Christians.) My church fully supports us and would marry us if it was legal in our state. Good Luck on your essay! And for the GLBT people out there get a Durable Power of Attorney, Medical Power of Attorney, and set up an estate as soon as possible even if you have nothing! This should give you some power that married couples have and we don't. God Bless!

Marriage rights (over 1000 at last count) are given by and adminstered by the STATE. Not allowing certain citizens to get such rights is state-sponsored discrimination, pure and simple.

Religion should have absolutely no say in what rights the STATE gives to its citizens, in a country that separates church and STATE.

Any two unrelated people who consensually would like to be married should be able to do so. In fact, NOT allowing them to do so is against the Constitution, which sets us all as being created equally. That's why bigots who want to ban same-gender marriage would need to re-write the Constitution through an amendment.

Note that there are some people (they claim to be religious) that say that LGBT people never have long-lasting relationships, and that they are having sex outside of marrage out of one side of their mouths, and then campaign against same-sex marriage out of the other side. Have you recently seen a better example of a hypocrite?

Hope this helps! Good luck!

I am totally against gay marriages. Marriage is a coming together of two sexes not gender. The two sexes balance each other out. There is the estrogen side and there is the testosterone side. Each have roles and responsibilities. It is not just about love. A gay marriage works so well simply because they are bonded by the struggle of being in a society that does not except the gay lifestyle. If gay marriages were normal they would be taken for granted just like our present marital charter has been taken for granted and they too would have high rates of divorce and miserable success.

Four years ago when I wasn't married yet (now I am, in Belgium they just changed the law...), if anything happened to my wife it wasn't me who could take all the decisions, although at the time we were already together for 16 years. This meant that if she would fall ill, her parents could deny me the right to visit her in hospital, if she would die I would not get a widow pension and her heirs could throw me out our home taking all her stuff with them, we payed takes as if we were singles (which were higher than the taxes for married people)... in short, we were as two strangers...
Luckily, now I'm married with her, now she IS my wife...
And people takes you more seriously once you get married you know...

But the most important thing pro gay marriage is that it allows two people to declare in front off their community that they choose each other and aim to stay together for life!
