we are on a budget but want to take the kids to Memphis to see Graceland

DO NOT STAY NEAR GRACELAND. Unfortunately it's in the hood.
10 minutes south is a town called Southaven Mississippi. Stay there. There are also cheap motels in Horn Lake Ms.
All ten minutes from Graceland

I live in Memphis. Microtel is pretty inexpensive, it's off of Germantown Pkwy and it's in a decent area. Don't stay near Graceland. Outside of the tourist attraction, it's pretty ghetto.

I agree with the previous comment: don't stay in any hotels around Graceland - not a good part of town.
