Its not that great......
most of my friends that went there are rather dumb.....
but its graduate programs are better.
In addition to the above comments:
I attended Eastern Illinois University for 2 years and transfered out for 2 reasons:
1> Not a very competetive school
2> very fraternity/sorrority oriented
THere were some things i liked about eastern as it is fun but both northern and Eastern are not very good schools but it depends on your major also..
ANd yes it is true notheastern Ill is not a good school at all.

In general, the university of XXXX is a better university than XXXX State university. That, in turn, is generally better than a "directional" state university like Northern XXXX University or Southern XXXX university. These, in general, are better than bidirectional state schools like Southeastern XXXX university.
In your case, University of Illinois is the best state university in Illinois -- being a very selective first tier university.
Illinois State is less selective and is ranked by US News as a third tier school.
Northern Illinois is not particularly selective and ranks as a fourth tier school (there are only four tiers -- so this is not a good thing). It isn't as good as Southern Illinois -- but is a little better than Eastern Illinois and Western Illinois.
True to form -- none of these schools is as bad as Northeastern Illinois.
The question you need to ask yourself is -- do you want to go to a public school that is the fourth or fifth best public school in the state? In California, that would be OK (UC-Davis is one of the best Ag schools in the country -- but ranks fourth among UC schools). In Illinois, I'd be thinking that I could do better.

I'm from Illinois and many of my friends from hs went to NIU most of them that I talk to enjoy the school but they do mention that the parties there can get really crazy. Also, a number of my friends that went to look at the school says it looks like a huge dump. So if you really want to party i wold suggest going there but if you NIU doesnt sound appealing might i suggest Eastern Illinois-its a very nice campus and my friends love going there.
If you think NIU is still for you make sure you see the school I'm almost positive that you'll change your mind about going there.
