i have to give a seminar on earths core and emf...(being physics student), can anyone gimme useful links? plus, i need some really dire effects of the failure of emf...by tomorrow 9pm(PST), thanks

According to this excellent FAQ from a NASA scientist, there isn't much attributable to a lack of magnetosphere.
1) Weather is not believed to be affected by the magnetic field.
2) The radiation belt would still be stopped by the earth's atmosphere, about 600 km out above the SOuth Atlantic at the weakest point
3) The atmosphere itself is not affected.

Magnetic compasses would be useless, but with the gyrocompass, LORAN, and GPS, we'd do fine. But without the magnetosphere deflecting most of the solar wind, we would have lots more cancer prompted by increased levels of gamma radiation. That's probably the most noticeable effect.
