I have known you a couple months now and I can tell you are a nice person with a good heart. He should already know this as well - apologize once and remind him it is an expression and then let it drop.
Or as a joke say "Oh, Mr. Sensitive stop being so gay." !!!!

you should apologize. I'm sure you wouldn't really feel good if he said all the good men are either straight or married, thus excluding you, now would you?
He definitely deserves an apology, and you were out of line. No one, not even straight men, like being made fun of because of who they are....

Maybe, not too soon. I have to agree with your comment. I hear & see the flaw of many men, and it is easy to see why a they don't have anyone. They don't want to see it and want someone to tell them they are soo wonderful while making demands and putting forth little to no effort. They can be all about chest puffing, rather than getting or keeping their stuff together. You feel the way you feel. You can apologize for hurting his feelings. But at least you gave him some time to be a little introspectrive and examine himself and what he may need to overcome to be in a successful relationship.

Seriously, some guys bring this on themselves. I know some "straight" guys who have been single forever, seem to have almost no interest in women, yet they get all offended when anyone calls attention to it. I know this doesn't apply to all guys, just because you don't date doesn't make you gay, but come on! You haven't even tried to hook up with a girl in like three years, maybe you're gay dude? Might take the edge off if you just tried to come to terms with it.

Well, in this case I would have added the exception comment so that he would know you weren't including him. Sometimes we say things out of turn without realizing, that said, I'm sure if you make it clear to him what was meant he will of course forgive you.

He is a bit too sensitive. Most guys would have said, "Gee, thanks" sarcastically and then laughed it off.
But he is your friend. Maybe say you are sorry you hurt his feelings, you were making a generalisation, and you don't think he is so repulsive noone would want him. That way you haven't really gone back on what you've said, just acknowledged that he was upset by it. And mentioned you don't think it's true of ALL men, just most.

probably should apologize and revamp your statement to
include the rest of your "exception" -- lots of folks of both
sexes have the same opinion. -- So do the Marines, and
they're just as sincere.

Do like I did. A straight friend of mine got offended because I said that all the girls that went to a certain college were hot and why couldn't we get some that looked like that. She said "Gee thanks". And I said, "you don't count because I don't look at you that way, you are like my sister". She said "awww", and that solved the whole problem. Just try telling him that you don't see him with "those" eyes and that he wasn't included in your comment, that should fix it.

too sensitive. He should've known that since you were talking to him about it, you couldn't be lumping him in with "bad men".
You should apologize and explain yourself, then rock him to sleep in your arms..sheesh, what a baby!
