and they are doing a 10 yr back ground what are they looking for?

Background checks look for criminal activity (i.e., a criminal record) and sometimes they do a credit check as well to see what kind of "person" you are; they believe they can judge your character with this information. They do not care about traffic tickets or stuff like that.
