I have an Uncle that says he can save me a lot of money by building all my studio equipment. I have seen a reverb processor and a mix board he made and it looks and sounds great but I am still scepticle. He knows what he is doing (he used to be a nuclear physics professor and does electronics on the side for 30 yrs) but how can I be sure that the equipment is not sub par? what questions do I need to ask or should I just buy my equipment which will have warranties?? Are their electrical guidelines that need to be followed? Please help???

This answer may not be as technical as you'd like but family is so important, that if I were you I'd let my uncle give it a shot! I come from a family of professors (math, physics and music!), and they LOVE to fiddle with stuff. If your uncle builds something that isn't quite right, he'll keep trying until he gets it right.
Make him happy, save some money, and my bet is you get something not only superior, but unique!
