After several hours of being in hibernation mode, my PC will turn itself back on. Anything I can do, or is the PC just getting old? It's about three years old.

Some machines have WOL. This stands for Wake On Lan. Maybe you are getting some network activity that causes your computer to come alive. I believe you can turn WOL off. I think it is a BIOS setting.

The thing to understand about hibernation is that Windows completely shuts down (And even your CPU is off), so no programs that you were running will wake it up (Stand By is a bit different, if you meant Stand By you need to say so). (In stand by mode the CPU is still powered up, but in a low power mode, programs are not running, but more things can wake up the CPU, like a program can ask it to wake up under some conditions).

So the only thing that can bring it out of hibernation is something that still has power, and this is very limited. It could be a network card, serial port, keyboard, or mouse, clock, ... but all of this will be controlled from the BIOS. So as was suggested by the other person, check the section in your BIOS that deals with power for things that can wake your computer up.

Actually for an older computer I can think of one more thing that can be happening. PC have "soft" power switches these days (as in they don't really turn completely off, but go into low power mode), so when you press the power button it is more like a signal to the motherboard/power supply to turn on full power. Well the circuits that sense the switch might be getting flaky. It is even possible that dirt in the switch might be causing this. Or maybe surges on the power line that before might have been ignored are now causing it to flip on.

My computer does the same and It's 2 years old. I believe it's perhaps a program in your computer or the anti-virus search starts, and that activity can bring it out of Hibernation because It will focus on the task. Check your anti-virus program and see if you set/it set and scan schedule time. Also check other programs and be sure they don't start running automatically.

It could be a setting within your bios.

Often times computers are set to different "wake on" settings.
You could have it set to "wake on lan" or "wake on modem" and when it detects activity on those devices it will come out of hibernation. It might even be "wake on usb" that is causing the problem.
