put yourself as laura and you are going to write a letter to jim, knowing that it will never be mailed, how and what would you say in that letter. I understood the other characters, but laura was more or less , less defined . so I am bewildered, so if you could help, I would appreciate it .

Laura tends to talk about things other than herself and, I believe, would look for common topics. Assuming that this is after the "Gentleman caller" scene, she might talk about Tom leaving, but put the emphasis on her mother's reactions.

Perhaps she has found a poem Tom left behind about leaving or about Jim or about working and she shares it with him. Maybe she could mention the broken unicorn, unknowingly using it as a symbol for herself -- has she left it as it is, with its horn next to it, trying to "help it" remember while in the very next paragraph she talks about keeping something of Tom's under her pillow to remind her of him, and how she feels incomplete.

Whatever she mentions, I think she would hide herself behind it, unwittingly revealing things about herself as she goes.

Laura is hardly "less defined" in this play. In fact, if you read it carefully, you'll find that Tennessee Williams has more to say about her than about any of the other three characters.

It's not a bad assignment, as these things go. Go on; give it a shot.
