Starting in the mid-1800s (with the Civil War being the largest example), the Federal government started taking over more and more of the powers and responsibilities that the Bill of Rights (Tenth Amendment) rightly assigns 'to the States, or to the People.' The more the Feds controlled, the less they had to fear from dissent. The less freedom people and states had, the less they cared what the government was doing because the less effect they could have on it. Companies and organizatons, on the other hand, saw the level of control that the politicians had on the society and began using (buying) those politicians to make laws that favor them. I think that is when we lost control of the government: when the power of the People became the Power of the Lobbyist, which only happened after the government had control of enough of the country's institutions that it was worth lobbying them.

If the government were to shrink back down to only its Constitutionally-given powers, there would be no point to lobbying because the politicians would not be in control of enough of the institutions to make it effective. Then the People could have their country back.

Great question. I think this started sometime around the 30’s when we saw the rise of the career politician. Before then most politicians had real jobs that they went back to after service. It has evolved into today’s groomed from birth politician. Because of this, people in politics do not fear reelection as they know that not only will they have more money then a challenger but the majority of people don’t care enough to vote in the election. We started to see voting in this country decline in the late 30’s. People started to become disillusioned towards the people in office. They no longer trusted them and started to believe that their vote dose not count. This is also why we are a two party system. People are afraid to vote for that third party because they believe that this party is never going to win. Politicians know this and play off it to keep us in the dark. As a result, we have the same faces running with the same ideas and the people think they have lost control.

America didn't forget.....government just got too big for it's britches. They tend to listen to lobbyists who can grease their palms. That's why it's serious time to do a big spring cleaning and get some new people in there. There's some who have been in so long they've forgotten it's not "their" agenda they're in there for. It's ours.
