I smoked about 10 a day with my first pregnancy. She was born healthy, 7lbs 5 oz. My second daughter who I didn't smoke with, weighed less than the first. It's best to quit, I know this, but the baby will most likely be fine.

I quit when I found out I was pregnant and it was SO DIFFICULT. The best thing to do is talk to your doctor about it. Ask for help! There are great resources and support out there! It was extremely, extremely difficult for me to quit...and I still crave cigarrettes every day (and I'm 7 months along too). It is a very powerful mental and physical addiction...it's not about being selfish...I know how it is to feel powerless against it. For all the other smokers that quit cold turkey the day they found out they were pregnant...good for them! But it's not the case for every person.

By the way, if you have cut down, then good for you! 2 or 3 a day is better than a pack a day...try cutting out 1 more a day, then another, and another. And don't feel like it's too late...quitting even 2 days before your due date is still better than not quitting at all. You CAN do this. Good luck!

Sounds like you've already cut back a great deal. While it's best to quit completely, let's not forget that in the 50's & 60's, many women weren't even advised to quit at all and it did not result in generation after generation of low birth weight babies. Today we know better, but still, I don't think your smoking 2 or 3 a day is any reason for widespread panic or any reason to insult you. Anyone who calls you selfish has clearly never been faced with your predicament. People are so quick to point fingers. If you were really selfish, you wouldn't even be asking, and in fact, you probably wouldn't even be pregnant.

At this point, I think the more important thing is to resolve not to smoke around the baby after he/she is born.

While its nice to hear all the "my baby was just fine and I smoked like a chimney," the fact is, that isn't always the case. Think of how devasted you would be if your baby had health issues that you caused. A girl I know just gave birth at 35 weeks and the baby has all kind of health issues...she continues to smoke even though the doc told her the smoke on her clothes could further endanger the baby's already fragile life. Go figure. Best of luck to you and baby.

I've been smoking since i was 16, about a pack a day. I'm now 35 and I'm 10 weeks pregnant. As soon as I found out I was pregnant, I put them down and haven't picked them up since. I still crave them every once in a while, but to me having a healthy baby is worth more than a puff of a cigarette. For women that say they can't put them down...they are just being selfish.

I smoked the whole time while pregnant with my first daughter & the first few months with my second daughter.

Doctor said I should give up, but truthfully I lacked the will power, even while I was smoking I tried thinking of what it was doing to my babys so it would make me put it out, but it didnt work.
Told my doctor I couldnt quit and he I should at least try to cut back, which I did.

My first daughter, now 27 months, has asthma that only affects her in winter and I cant say anything about my second daughter as she is only 2 weeks old.

Due to my eldest daughters asthma she was put in hospital, when she was just over a year old, with Pneumonia. She hated it, she was pretty much confined to bed with a drip in her foot (that was the doctors flaut, he stuffed up the drip in her arm) she had the oxygen tube up her nose the whole time (which she tried to yank out) and every 3 hours the nurses would come in & pump her full of ventilon even if she was asleep. Poor kid, she spent most of the time crying & wonting to come home.

I know in some cases its easier said than done & with my actions I have no right to tell you, but please do try to quit. It will make you and your baby stronger.

I only have to think about when my daughter was in hospital, the look on her face, think of how scared she was and how much she cried and it makes me cringe. And I know I desever it. I have now since quit and hope fully you can to.

Good luck :)

I quit the day I found out with both of mine, but my friend still smokes and she is 5 months pregnant she might smoke more than you do, she said she cant stop either. Have you talked to your doctor about it? At least you cut back and dont smoke as much some women dont even try.

My mom smoked while pregnant with me, I was a preemie, 4lbs 11oz.....and have always had a heart murmur also known as Mitro Valve Prolapse. Other than that, I've been a very healthy person.

Just be prepared for some very negative remarks with this question.

Having said that I smoked when I was pregnant about as often as you do. It was hard to quit, I know that I really should have but I didn't. My son was born happy and healthy and weight 8lbs and 5 ozs. He has no breathing problems and is just fine.

Well don't stress. You and your baby will be fine. A few is better than a pack. Obviously none is best but cutting back works too. Your baby is getting less that way. Make sure your doctor knows so that they can watch for any problems but you should be fine. Just make sure you don't smoke about 30 minutes before going to the doctor. It will affect your blood pressure. Good luck and congrats on the baby

BTW... Smoking doesn't hurt the babys lungs! lol.. the baby isnt using them yet!!!
