ferris bueller's day off?

does anyone know what stage of the maturation process do you think Ferris is in? Explain with reference to the movie.

1) identity diffusion status -avoid thinking about jobs, roles, values
2) moratorium status -suffer identity crises of various kinds
3) identity achievement status -have made their own commitments
4) foreclosure status -unquestioningly endorse parents' goals and values

and what about cameron frye? what stage is he in?

Ok, so superficially it apears that ferris is at stage 1, because of his irresponsible behavior. In addition Ferris' actons seems at odds with usual notion of a mature adolecent; studiously working away at their colledge goals. This is not infact the real situation but rather an exhibits the writers oppinions on the education system, and society's use of only a small number of characterisics to define maturity.

Ferris however is actually in stage 3. Although feris' never identifies a carrer path as such, the film does suggest he has visions for the future, his aside about graduation and the eventual separation of the group to college (while attempting to remove Cameron from his comatose state) is an example of this. In addition, it is noted,by cameron, at the parade, that Feris is able to "do anything," and although his carrer path is undifined ("a fryer at ____") it is suggested that he is so confidant and so self-realised that his carrer path is not of issue.

There is also a suggestion within the film that Ferris always has a plan. HIs forsight of the probable reactions of others is arguably an important characteristic of an individual at stage 3. The contingancy plans Ferris sets up are examples of this abilty to think ahead. For instance the ansewer on the doorbell and dummy in his bed room and even the pre-emptive phonecall as Mr Peterson (Sloan's Father).

However it is not Ferris' plans and forsight of the future that most demonstrate that he is in stage 3, but rather his convictions. Ferris holds the enjoyment and experiance of life as a core value. Although this does not fall within the usual notion of the values an individual within stage 3 would hold, the writer of the film goes to great lenghth to show its importance, specifically in contrasting Ferris to Cameron. Where because of his conviction Ferris is seemingly able to conquer the world, cameron, who has none is not even able to conqure his father.


Feris' maturity however most powefully put across when it is suggested that he alwasy has an objective. . When Sloan says to Ferris "you knew exactly what you were doing when you got up thismorning" meaning that main goal of the day was to free Cameron.The writer suggests that Ferris' life is more than just a propetual search for fun, asthough he were in stage 1, but rather he has comitments and plans, more akin to somone in stage 3.

Feris' choices of activity also suggest that he is not mearly avoiding the inevitable future but rather is a deep and reflective individual who has a profound self understanding, a characteristic neccicary for a person in stage 3. His choice to visit the art gallery instead of a video arcade, eat at a fine restaraunt as opposed to a Buger King, and the somwhat phiosophical edge to the discussion in the Tall building all point to stage 3 maturity.

Cameron, although superficially being more mature than Ferris, is infact less so. Cameron is studious and responsible, the writer showes that those traits do not in themselves create maturity. Cameron is a confused, fearfull, undertain, this is shown by
1) his unhealthy way of dealing with his family situation
2) his ability to be forced into things by ferris.

Cameron is also far more uncertain about his future than Ferris, as shown in his disscussion with sloan at the parade.

However Cameron develops thoughout the film from a stage 1, to a stage 2, and by the edge is almost reaching stage 3.

He is definately in the identity diffusion status. The whole movie is about completely blowing off school. He doesn't worry about how his actions impact others. He doesn't care if he gets in trouble. He begins his day by lying to his parents about being sick. It's been a while since I saw the movie, so it's hard to give you more details. (It's a FUNNY movie; you should rent it.)
