Have you considered journalism? I don't know what type of law you practiced, but being any kind of lawyer would refine your ability to ask tough questions and get to the bottom of .complicated matters. Your combo of english and law likely mean you have an extensive vocabulary and background knowledge on a variety of topics, as well as the ability to deliver insightful commentary. In my opinion, you sound very uniquely qualified to be a columnist or editor with a paper or magazine. If you take your specific interests into consideration, political/governmental columns may interest you or if your law experience was aimed more at business then you could write about the goings on of corporate America. That crazy stock picker on CNBC, Jim Cramer...he's a law school grad.
The point is, you are highly educated and have a command of language. Your background in law is not something almost any other journalist can claim, and it would set you apart. You should consider it! Media may be the place for you.
Good luck!
Oh, it just occured to me, and I didn't want to erase what I already wrote, but if you like politics at all, you would likely be a very good Communications Director for a campaign. Working with the media, putting out press releases, crafting and then making sure a candidate stays on message. That would also potentially be a good job, in spite of your distaste for salesmanship. Anyway, good luck out there.

Funny I was unhappy being an Auditor got accepted to an MBA then decided to go back to the JC and figure it out so now I am currently taking a self eval class and am now debating on Law school and other options (still evaluating) The only thing I can recommend is to find a class as good as the one I found or if you are one of the self disciplined types a good career guidance book and find one of those fun jobs and maul on what you find out. I found and set up a fun job (which I start in May and will start a year of good old fashion mauling before any kind of commitment) DO NOT discount going back to school for what you want to do, you can always find something less then college level in a new field and take night classes to get caught up.
This is my path if it helps you with any direction great if not I can only say my path is not right for everyone.

You could write legal thrillers like John Grisham.
You could teach either English or Law - I imagine law pays more.
You could edit a legal journal.
You could run for a low level political office - lots of politicians were lawyers first.
Good luck!
