however, nickelback, avril and sum 41 did.? why do some bands make it south of the border while some don't, and more importantly, why is it the really annoying ones that suceed in the states (ie-alanis, avril, celine, )?

Personally I think all the mentioned bands suck. But to answer your question the artists that choose to stay "Canadian" won't suceed State side, they need to move south & pick up a large U.S. label to make it big. With that said, record companies will only produce what they think sells, & currently that's pop rock.

You forgot the Canadian band that this is most true for, The Tragically Hip. It's just a difference in taste I think.
