Well I don't know about MAC.
I have Vista as a second operating system on my computer. I really liked the new graphic shiny stuff, but this reduce the performance of your machine, it really needs a powerful computer!
If you ask me why I wont use Vista as my first operating system I will tell you why:
1-It slows my machine even that I have a powerful one.
2- some softwares didn't work in it like Adobe reader 8, which is a bad sign that other programs might not work either.
3- Vista needs longer time to start and to shut down than XP.
4- I don't need the HIGH level of security that Vista has, may be if am using my computer as a server I would think about it, anyway, any anti virus would do the job.
5- You don't need to install drivers, Vista will do it. But it didn't recognize my new HP printer, which doesn't have a Vista CD to install its driver, so you might need to go check the web for drivers that vista doesn't support.
The things I liked about Vista is the new Aero look and the Chess game :D
In my opinion it doesn't deserve that high price.

I would hold off on Vista for another year because it is currently incompatible with some hardware and is very buggy. Mac is more suited for creative applications, such as photos, music editing, video editing, but cannot run at least 80% of the games out there. I would stick with XP for the time if you want to play games. If not, go to a Mac or Linux.

If you can afford then you may go for MAC. Inspite of the cool look it is also very fast in doing high performance work, compared with our clone PC. Usually a MAC processor having same clock speed as that of other processors performs better. And MAC has another superiority over windows that is it is less vulnerable to viruses than windows. There are very few number of viruses written for MAC, but a numerous number is for windows.

Honestly, they do the same thing. They run basically the same software.
If you are used to Windows, go Vista. I've used it for months (from RC1) and it works fine. Need good hardware, especially video card, or many screen activity will be woefully slow.
Mac, or any of the linux OS, is rock solid. If you are used to it, go mac.
A third option many don't explore, is to install one of the other linux OS's similar to Windows or a Mac. You can install a free linux OS in a number of flavors. My favorite is Ubuntu.com.
Check out Ubuntu with Beryl at utube. You will be AMAZED!

Did I mention, linux like Ubuntu, is FREE.
