and where are they? On a recent visit, I saw a collection basket for food at the grocery store. I was wondering where they sent it because I have never seen any evidence of poor people on the Vineyard.

good question- i go to the Vineyard most summers with my family...historically, there has always been economically diverse persons visiting the island...ranging from working-class to upper class. I would assume that there are very few homeless individuals on the Island, since it would be a difficult plight to maintain during the harsh winter months, but I'm sure that there are some families who could use additional financial assistance given the dramatic market shift that took place in the mid 1990s (i.e. a one-bedroom house can cost over 1 million nowadays-ridiculous)...so to answer your q, it's possible but the numbers are probably not very high.
