He took the following classes: a 2 hour credit art, a 3 hour credit history, a 4 hour credit science course, a 3 hour credit mathematics course, and a 1 hour science lab. He received a “B” in the art class, an “A” in the history class, a “C” in the science class, a “B” in the mathematics class, and an “A” in the science lab. Okay what you do is number of credits * the grade received (4 of A, 3 for B...) to equal the number of points. Then you divide the number of points by the number of credits to get the GPA:

Class: credits*grade=points

Art: 2*3=6
History: 3*4=12
Science:4*2=8
Math: 3*2=6
Lab:1*4=4

(number of points)/(number of credits)
(6+12+8+6+4)/(2+3+4+3+1)
36/13
2.76923
2.77

At my college the hours did not factor into the GPA score. The numeric values associated with grades are as follows.
A=4 points
B=3 points
C=2 points
D=1 point.
So you would take his grades: B A C B A. Assign them their numeric value (3,4,2,3,4) add them up(=16), and then divide by the number of courses taken(5).
You get 3.2 wich is a low B.
