Oh heck to rent a flat you need a months rent in advance plus a months rent as a deposit. That is a nasty amount in London. I moved back to Australia 4 years ago and before I left I was paying 700 pounds a month for a shoddy 2 bedroom flat in a pretty shoddy area!! You might need to share a place with another person or family. I tried searching the web for you but there are so many sites. I looked under accommodation to rent and shared accommodation to rent.
I guess your next question might be what areas are safe for kids? Id say SW London with some exceptions (dont go to Brixton) Try North of the river, but you'll pay even more. Cheaper places are far out and probably not where you'd want your kids growing up. What about thinking about a bit rural? Towards Essex or Hertfordshire but out of London?
I dont feel I have been much help - do a search for property prices and see what you think. Get a map up too, in another window and check out how far you are from the hustle and bustle.
London is fabulous but outrageously costly.

Low income housing and London do not sit well in the same sentence...London is extremely expensive and is probably the most expensive capital in the world to live in...

Do a search for Estate agents or letting agents in London, and you may get an idea of the costs from there....

I wish you well...

It's like moving to Manhattan...what you want doesn't exist. London is one of the most expensive cities in the world, there are no cheap apartments in any area you want to live. You have to move to the outer areas to find what you want.

Are you just moving there because you want to or because you need to?

Most of the questions you need answered should be asked of the nearest British Consulate office.
