On an issue as important as defence, it is important for them to do what they think is right in the long term interest of the country. That is why we have elected them into Government, even if it does mean committing political suicide, as you put it. The long term security of the country is more important than party politics, or the careers of individual politicians.

I would never accept the opinions of left wingers or Liberals on this one. Nor would one issue alone be sufficient to make me change my political allegiance, except one: I would not vote for any party that wanted to take Britain into a Federal States of Europe. That is too important, and would be irreversible.

It isn't a key issue - it has always been part of Conservative policy - and that's part of the reason I will be voting Conservative.

I don't think that the Tories have anything to worry about on that score.

Mind you the Labour party is completely split on the issue - that isn't going to help their election chances.

Why are you suprised? The Conservative party have always been in favour of nuclear weapons, more so than Labour. Only the Lib Dems have ever opposed the idea.

We should not make the mistake of thinking that we can avoid the expense of keeping ourselves armed!
We should not take American protection for granted!
We should not forget that there are bad guys out there.
We should not allow ourselves to become complacent.

I don't think much of Tony Blair and his bunch, or indeed David Cameron. But they are both right to make sure we remain vigilant and capable of protecting ourselves.
