Because in their delusional minds, they think that religion has anything to do with patriotism.
Despite the fact that the Constitution (Article VI) specifically forbids any type of religious test or oath as a condition of holding office.

This is an absolute untruth. The issue of Atheism and Patriotism are criticized completely separate of each other. However, rarely has criticism of Atheism comes from politicians it is the religious segment of this country. Just so you are aware the religious segment of this country is criticized way more than we Atheists are.
Edit: George H.W. Bush is frequently credited with saying Atheists are not citizens. HE NEVER SAID THIS. Try quesitoning your sources. He was referring to his personal views on religion. Here is the actual statement;
Sherman: What will you do to win the votes of the Americans who are atheists?
Bush: I guess I'm pretty weak in the atheist community. Faith in God is important to me.
Sherman: Surely you recognize the equal citizenship and patriotism of Americans who are atheists?
Bush: No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God.
Sherman (somewhat taken aback): Do you support as a sound constitutional principle the separation of state and church?
Bush: Yes, I support the separation of church and state. I'm just not very high on atheists.

Liberals, and Republicans alike think about the same on this issue. It is because America was built on Gods laws. The people that built this country were very religious, and prayed. Very few were unreligious. Remember our coinage, and dollars, say "In God We Trust". The people who built this country were Christians. When you have atheists living amongst you, who don't believe that there is a God, people are apt to say you're unpatriotic, which for them is true. To them, it means you don't believe in the foundations set down by our forefather's, like the Constitution, and although I myself don't buy into that theory, I understand where they are coming from.

because they are scared of us.
I pay my taxes, I vote in every election. Love my country. I live what I consider to be a moral life, full of integrity and spirituality and teach my children to do the same.
I just don't believe in god, or religion. I don't need the crutch of it all, and life is far too short to spend it worrying about some fallacy of the afterlife.
if that makes me "unpatriotic" then so be it. I guess Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson were unpatriotic, as well.

Do they? I've never heard any politician say that. I suppose atheists are not organized. If they presented a voting block, the politicians would be pandering to them, just like every other vocal group.

I guess you have to believe in Yaweh, Allah, Zeus, Aton, Baal etc. or some god as a prerequisite to being an American. I'm not sure which one politicians worship. Maybe Mammon.
If all athiests are unpatriotic, then
all believers must be patriotic!!!

Because they are scared of people who do not need an imaginary friend to tell them what is right and wrong. So the best thing for them to do is make Atheist a bad word and discredit anyone who is one. We know that mentally we are stronger.

Good ?. Just because you don't believe in a God, doesn't mean that you don't love your country. Im not religious, and I love my country thoroughly. This explosion of America haters and anti-Bush nutjobs has got me on the defensive for sure!

because some people think god has blessed america (manifest destiny for example)
and not believeing in god means not believeing we are blessed.
which means you don't believe we have a divine right to exist and conduct ourselves the way we do.
and some will say that means you don't support america
