Most people who can't pay the rent don't have enough motivation to go through the trouble of counterfeiting money.

They will just steal it, since it is easier than making passable counterfeit bills.

The majority of people that counterfeit money do it as part of some larger illegal business like drug trafficking or prostitution - if they can pass the bills off to people who are less likely to check them carefully, then they can increase their profits.

There are different theories on the denominations that you should counterfeit. Some people think that you should do the largest bills possible, since you won't have to make as many, and you will get the biggest return on your work.

The problem is getting people to take big bills, since they will have to break them somewhere to spend them.

My theory has always been - if you could make a passable bill (the paper has to be right, the ink, especially now that they are making them slightly multicolored, the printing itself, and the way they are cut are all ways to identify counterfeit money - you would be surprised how hard it is to get all of the details just right, and even then a bank could identify one even if it looks and feels right) that you should do small bills - ones and fives. Almost noone ever checks small bills to see if they are legit - though a twenty or larger will usually get a quick swipe with the marker to check if it is real or not.

You could slip the fake ones/fives in with real cash to make your money go further. Of course if you get caught counterfeiting - there are some pretty serious consequences, and even if you get caught passing off fake bills, you can get into some trouble (though it might be harder for them to prove that you knew they were fake - because you could just tell them that you got them as change from someplace.

The mob. Seriously. Basicly, anybody who wants to make a profit from the difference between the actual cost of making money and the value you get from those bills you printed can try to counterfeit money... but those who really do it seriously are organised, and they have means.

Anybody can print bills. However, bills have been loaded with anti counterfeiting measures, and now, those are rather elaborate. They are printed on special paper, and there are a number of tricks to make sure that the real mc coy is different from what you get out an ordinary printer or xerox machine.

So if you want to make funny money without it getting caught too fast (the longer it has been in circulation, the harder it is to trace to you), you have to do it proper, and that takes getting the right paper (or a fair imitation), the right inks, the right printing system... probably carving your own plates too... Overall, you can make money cheap through economy of scale, but it needs an initial outlay that's beyond a two bit hood. Plus, you make profits by printing the stuff on an industrial scale, not just enough for your pocket money, so you'll also need to distribute the bills, for which you'll need a network.

So overall, unless you're ready to barely make up your costs, or to get caught within the month, this is the kind of operation for the mob, not for individual criminals.

The last counterfeiter I heard about was a 14 year old kid that had access to his father's printing hardware. The moment the new $10 bills came out, he ran off hundreds of them. I got to see one of them and they were really good. Hard to tell the difference without one of those pens they check bills with.

Really don't know how to answer your question. There are criminal minded people in all walks of life and then there are poor people who do not think like a criminals. But I would think to be able to pull off counterfeiting, you would have to be bright and computer literate.

You're asking why people choose that crime, as opposed to some other crime, as a way to make money....?

Becuase it requires a different skills set than burlary or robbery or extortion or embezzlement.
