Annuals live for one season. They grow, flower, seed and die before winter.

Perennials live for years. THey may go dormant in the winter, but then grow again in the spring. This includes things that disappear completely above ground in winter (like peonies), and things that don't die completely back, but add more growth each year (like shrubs and trees)

Biennials live for two seasons. They grow the first year, are dormant in the winter, then re-grow the following spring, and flower, seed, and die that second year.

"Annual means that you have to plant it annually. Annuals are what most garden centers sell for instant color. They bloom usually once, and stop.

"Perennial" regrown every year. Perennials usually bloom through out a growing season. You can deadhead the old blooms as they fade and with the proper fertilizer, they can and will bloom again that season.

"Biennial " means that it will grow good strong healthy plants for two years. The plants might last longer than the two years but th will not be as pretty or healthy as the first two years.
