My new Dell desktop XPS included two sets of cables for the monitor, with the recommendation that I use the DVI (digital video) cables for the best result. But there is no configuration of cables / monitor settings that will work with these cables, so I've been using the analog videos (probably lower quality resolution). I spent 4 hours with Dell tech support, for nothing. Any thoughts here?

I also have a Dell XPS 410. I had no problems with the DVI cable whatsoever.

From what I understand the only real electronic difference is in the bottom line speed of the signal from the PC to the monitor. The DVI is faster. The difference between the VGA and the DVI is something you will never notice visually.

I don't have a clue why you are having a problem with the DVI but I wouldn't really worry too much about it and I'd simply use the VGA cable.

If this is really bothering you, call a local PC repair shop and simply ask them the question. They may have an answer for you.

Hope this helps.

Connect both cables from your computer to your monitor.

Go to
Control Panel -- Display -- Settings
and see you can see whether you can see two monitors (digital and analog) or not.

And disconnect your VGA and see what happenes.

Note that if your monitor has two inputs (DVI and VGA), it should have some button to change input.
