you can see and hear the baby's on an ultrasound as early as 6 weeks- however it has been scientifically proven that the heart beats at day 21- counting from day of conception.
And for David l I just want to correct you in the nicest way I can- The baby's heart is beating on its own- how do I know? An ultrasound hears that heart of the baby- if it was the mothers- it would be the same rate- a baby's heart is about twice the number of beats in the womb as the mothers. You can see the baby's heart beating- it is beating faster then the mothers. If it was the mother's heart rate- the baby would die when you cut the umbilical cord.

First heartbeats begin about 18 days after conception. You will be able to detect it through vaginal utltrasound around 5.5 weeks. You can hear it around week 13 or 14 through a doppler.

The baby's heart starts beating when it is born. Until then it is working off your heart, and beating with your heart.
What you are actually asking is when does the fetus' heart start practicing, isn't it?
