G'day,
It is true that Adelaide (South Australia) and Tasmania (and actually Western Australia) have a lower cost of living compared with the other states. However, you may also have to consider whether or not you will have problem living in smaller towns. Some students, especially comes from big cities in Asia (such as HK, S'pore, KL, Jakarta, Bangkok), expressed that they had some problems adjusting to the quietness of living in Australia, and these are the students in Sydney and Melbourne (2 biggest cities in Oz). I had to admit that I was also somewhat 'shocked' by how different things are in Melbourne compared in my home country.
In regards to the universities, there are only 39 universities in Australia, therefore the quality and recognition of their graduates are equal from wherever university you are studying from. The most important thing is you have to READ the course information carefully, since some courses may have the same name but different content. Some accounting courses in one uni allow students to combine subjects from different majors or faculties as part of the degree program. Some are not.
In regards to the "Group of 8" (http://www.go8.edu.au/), it is a group formed by some Australian Uni's so they can have unified strategy for marketing purposes. However this does not represent the fact that they are 'The Best of The Best University" in Australia. As for accounting degree, it is offered by all universities in Australia, and therefore the material and recognition are the same. You may also notice that Uni of Adelaide is also part of Group of 8.
In regards to your future employment, the most important thing that employer will look is the results on your transcript. Even if you are graduated from Uni of Melb, but your marks are just Passes & Credits, the employer will probably look more favorably towards applicants with High Distinctions & Distinctions students from say... Charles Sturt Uni.
There are also some comments that international students tend to receive better attention and services in less favourite uni, since less students, then more attention can be given. Please note my choice of word... less favorite, not less reputable ;)
So there you go... you are on the right track already, by deciding which city and which uni you are going to study. If you are still not very sure, e-mail me at mikegun@studentfirst.com.au. Good luck on your study and welcome to Australia :)
