Christine,
The cost of living is so outrageous in CA that making $50k would be similar to a $35,000 job on the east coast. It is just average. It could be worth it if you like what you are doing, don't mind living in an apartment and can get promoted quickly from within. I moved here from Ky, but plan to move back when it's time to retire.
Please think this one over very thoroughly.

The other two posters are right. It all depends on your location, and on the kind of lifestyle you are accustomed to. Where I live in Milwaukee, WI, you could live pretty well on 50K with a family of 2. But if you were living in Chicago, I don't know how far that would stretch.
I figure that on the coasts and in big cities like Chicago, the cost of living is at least double that of the Midwest and the South. (California is pretty expensive from what I hear.)

Where in CA? CA housing cost is very high. Still need more info ;)
You will be pretty tight with 50K, a family of 2 in the Long Beach area. Good luck though ;)

I live in Southern CA and make $70+ a year, family of 2. If you have any debt, like loans or a car payment, it's going to be really tight when you factor in rent (for a 2 bedroom apartment in a fairly decent area you're looking at $1400. Don't believe the prices they put on the websites. For instance, my apartment complex lists apartmetns for $900 and in really small letters say "prices may be outdated").
Good luck!

depends 100% on Location.
You could not support a family of 2 in Manhattan, boston, seattle, lax properly on 50k a year.
If you are a rural area in the midwest or south you can live a very comfortable life. So we would really need to know the location to answer properly.

50K/year is a good salary but there is other things to consider such as what State are you moving? California cost of living is high compare to some State, so rent for a 3 bedroom along will range from approximately $1800-$2200 depending on what city you intend to reside.

3 out of 4 people in the US, (including New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, etc). make less than $50,000 per year. They all live fairly comfortable lives. So, yes, you can easily support a family of 2, ANYWHERE in the US on that salary. Now, you may have a somewhat MORE comfortable lifestyle in Kansas City than in New York City, but you could easily support 2 people on that much (or less).
If you live in Kansas City, for instance, you may be able to afford a BMW rather than a Toyota because your rent may be $400 or $500 per month less than in New York City. I know lots of people who live in the New York/New Jersey and also the Boston area who make MUCH less than $50,000 per year and still own a house and a car, and send their kids to very good universities and colleges.

That sounds exceedingly good, however eighty-a hundred and twenty is a great variety. The intense end sounds extra or less two times what he's making in the united kingdom. isn't 450 pounds with reference to comparable to 250 US money? If he's making this form of money, he ought to probably get economic suggestion from a professional, no longer Yahoo solutions.

Depends entirely on location, in this Mid-west, rural area,
it's a pretty fine chunk of cash and you'd be quite comfortable.
In California I know there's places that you'd have trouble
meeting your obligations, but understand that the are other
locations in the same state that you income would be adequate.

Depends on where you are moving... won't go far in California or New York... but where I live in Alabama a lot of families with two incomes don't even make that in a year... you can live quite nicely in the deep south on that kind of money...
