I recall back in the 80's when St. John's was regularly near the top of the Big East and a national power in college basketball, but in recent year's they have been nowhere. What happened to them? Wouldn't a lot of good young players want to study and live in New York?

Coaching. In NCAA the teams with the best coaches, with full support from the university, recruit and get the best players. Once a great coach retires it's tough to replace him. I saw St. Johns at a regional in Tucson a few years back. That's the last good team they had.

Good question. Have you ever heard the term "The Fish Stinks From The Head!"? Well, when you have an administration that doesn't care one way or another about a BBall program that is the 7th winningest program in NCAA history, this is what happens. Note 7th winningest program of all time because not so long ago SJU was the 4th winningest program of ALL TIME. Once this administration took over in the early 90's, the program fell apart. Yeah, they're were a few winning seasons mixed in over the past 15 years or so but nothing compared to the tradition rich years prior to this administration.
Add to the equation a Mike Jarvis, a sex scandal and paying SCRUB players and this is what you get.
Hopefully Norm Roberts can turn this mess around. However time is running out as fans of the program are losing patience. GO GET EM' NORM!!!!! Keep the NYC kids home!!!

Mike Jarvis ruined the program. He alienated local talent by burning bridges with local catholic league coaches through his arrogance. He then paid Abe "Two points per game" Keita to play basketball at St. John's, which put the program on probation for a few years. He also recruited players of questionable character/talent that were either never going to set foot on campus or not be successful once they did. He is a complete fraud of a coach. He succeeded with Fran's players and only brought in one impact player, Marcus Hatten. He should never sniff another college coaching job unless its D III or Juco or something close to a race track since he seemingly loves betting the ponies more than recruiting.

Mike Jarvis decided to stop recruiting local players and he thought he could win with juco's.

The sex scandal happended and been all down hill since.

He ruined local relationships with the hs coaches, he got lazy and ended up not caring.

Now time for Norm Roberts to clean up the mess. He has a broom but not sure he is the man to make this place back to elite.

MIKE JARVIS hopefully will not coach a Div. 1 team again so no school deserves to go down the gutter like SJU has.
