Can someone explain the rationale to me about this one.
Let's say a guy commits a crime, spends time in prison and is released on probation.
Then some are disenfranchised from voting in elections.
I thought voting was a right, not a privilege.
I can understand revoking drivers licenses, etc., but what purpose does this really serve?
It should instill some social responsibility by forcing these individuals to vote, if it could in fact be done.

Because the people decided not to permit them the vote.

Is it a right? Arguably it is part of liberty and the participation in civic life again, so I could see that belief.

As to FORCING people to vote, it is also their right NOT to vote.

They can't legally in any States, It isn't ever counted in the end. Felons have lost their voting privilege when they decided to commit the crime.

You lose the right to vote when you commit a serious crime.
Most felons do not care about social responsibilities - if they did, they wouldn't have committed their crime.

Should this change?
Maybe if a felon could PROVE he/she has been socially responsible for a period of several years, maybe, just maybe, they should be given their right to vote back.

But again most felons don't give a damn about voting anyways.

voting is often referred to as "the right to vote", but i don't the the Bill of Rights list is as one of the unalienable rights.

voting insn't really a RIGHT, it is a PRIVILEGE -- by committing and being convicted of a felony, a person gives up that PRIVILEGE. some of us would argue that by committing a felony offense, a person is choosing to give it up.

Do you really want someone who's a rapist voting for your leader? Seriously, don't commit the crime if you can't do the time and the after effects. They chose that life.

When you can't respect other's rights (that's why they are felons), you lose yours. It's also a way to prevent corruption.

Felons can vote, as long as they keep a good record and can get their crime expundged.
