Gandhi was responsible for popularising the concept of non-violence ("Ahimsa") and consequently "satyagraha" (meaning truthful struggle). The effectiveness of these two concepts can be gauged by the fact that using these tools he almost single-handedly brought British colonialism to its knees - this is no mean feat considering that British imperialism ruled colonies for more than a few centuries and was literally wiped out within 30 years. This is because the use of force against a non-violent protest is considered very bad taste and showed that you can rule peoples' bodies but you cannot rule their minds.

This has been his most important contribution.

Spearheaded the independence movement in India.
But perhaps even more importantly he championed the use of non-violent mass protest as a means to challenge oppressive governments. And it worked. As such he was a major influence on figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela.
