This is my personal opinion from experience and being around computer geeks.
Yes, it is normal for any kind of machine like that to feel warm, but if it's got a "fever" or if you think it's a little TOO warm, then either turn it off or put it on an elevated platform so that it can lose some "body heat".
Also (if you can), locate the PS3's fan and make sure it's away from confined or warm places. (all systems have a cooling method.)
