If I made a petition for a new law to go into effect would you sign this. It would state that a driver pulled over with no proof of insurance will have their car towed and can only pick it up if they show proof of insurance as well as the payment. By the 3rd time the police has the right to impound your car and sell it at an auction? What do you think? Any suggestions? Feedback?

Signed.

Why can't the insurance companies run a web site where you type in a licence plate and it tells you immediately whether a car is insured or not?

This deal where people get insurance, get their tags then cancel the insurance is stupid.

No I would not sign it. Are you just going to leave the person on the side of the road when their car is towed? Or are the police going to be burdened with driving this person around, when they could be doing other things? I guess your law is nice in theory, but it is not practical.

The law may not even be constitutional. Before you take someone's property, they are entitled to due process (notice and opportunity to be heard). If the police are going to impound a car and then sell it, someone is going to have to hold a hearing - this will cost a lot of money.

You should think this over again, considering the above.

It is a good idea for people like "notaclue" but it is alittle extreme. You need to put some modification in there where they would get a chance to get insurance within a timeframe and as Ethan has mentioned what will happen to people once they are stopped without it? There has to be some median between getting stopped and getting the car towed. Then after that (including a few choices to reduced fees if these people are destitute) yes your idea is a good one. It just makes way for a more militant community and once that starts what will happen next?

Although insurance is necessary and important and it should be mandetory it should also be affordable! many people simply cannot pay for insurance for their cars or even their health because it's a choice between eating and having gas to get to work etc. or insurance. I believe what needs to happen rather than punishing those who can't afford it (because face it if they could they WOULD) is there needs to be serious reform in the insurance industry. We need some limits to what they can charge and some accountability when they are supposed to be doing their thing! It is the ONLY produt that you buy hoping that you won't need it and beleive me when you do you will spend considerable time and effort getting them to live up to their end of the bargain and pay the bill! And for this we pay them HOW MUCH???? The real issue is the insurance industry and the government's failure to oversee it.

No thanks, many can't afford insurance but, they need to drive so they can go to work and feed their family, if you get into an accident with someone with no insurance just sue them. I think you should have a petition to have the insurance companies not to overcharge everyone for the insurance and that would solve the problem of many not having insurance. Start at the top and work your way down, insurance companies are rich, many american families live in poverty.

Absolutely! For those of us law abiding citizens it's long over due! I don't think they should get three chances either!
That vehicle should be impounded and the sale used to pay damages for victims of accidents or what ever as a result of their criminal activity!!!
PS: I think Ethan Hun is seriously delirious in his assessments! Possibly too many cartoons during early childhood! Why would "due process" be required when the officer already knows they can't produce proof of insurance?

First of all insurance companies are nothing more than a racket brought to you by conservative republicans.

If the police would do their jobs correctly and keep speeders and unlicensed children off the roads there would be much less accidents and the need for insurance would drop.

It sounded good, until you mentioned impounding and reselling the car. I think people should be punished for this crime but that is a little too extreme.

Hi Nadya-
Here in Ireland if you are caught driving without insurance then you are off to chokey-the slammer- unless its your lucky day and you get a hefty fine.
My only criticism of your proposal is why wait until 3rd time caught?
If you can afford the car you can afford the insurance cover to go with it.

I'd sign it. I've been hit 4 times in 20 years. None of the four people had insurance.
