I am 40 weeks and 1 day. Yesterday I had an internal and then 15 hours later had a bloody show. I know it might just be from the cervix getting irritated during the internal, but am hopeful that it also might be a prelabour sign. I am only 1cm dilated. I am wondering if anyone has had a bloody show following an internal in late pregnancy? If so, how long after this happened did labour start? I am on bedrest right now-on the wait list for induction due to high blood pressure so cannot do anything to bring it on any quicker.

Hooray! A show is a positive sign that your cervix is ripening. They will often perform internals late in pregnancy and even do a 'sweep' of your cervix to help things along. It's working! yay. I had an internal at 41 weeks and my baby was born 3 days later. Since you're on bedrest I guess that means you can't get down and scrub the floor. It may help to just stand up or even squat just to get the baby's head pushing down on the cervix. Another position you might like to try is kneeling but leaning forward onto something. Is a hot curry out of the question? Sex also helps as the prostaglandins in sperm help to bring on labour. (That's what they use to induce when they use the gel - prostaglandin). Nipple stimulation works really well for some. I'm not really sure what you're allowed to do or not do. If you've got high blood pressure, surely an induction (which usually means short latent phase) will be just as stressful as anything I've suggested?

Good luck! How exciting :D

The doctor probably loosened your mucus plug. It happened to me with all three of my babies following an exam. It's normal. I'm surprised he didn't tell you that could happen. With my last one I was having "bloody show" for about a week before I actually had her. ummm....for all three now that I think about it. But it also took me a long time to go from 1-4 centimeters and have labour really kick in.

Sorry hun, but not the best news. It could be a sign of labor, but there's a good chance it's just from the exam. I bleed after EVERY exam, I have a "sensitive cervix". But it's possible that it's a sign of labor too, so don't give up hope. Either way, the end is in sight, so good luck! And of course, congratulations!

i had a bloody show at 32 weeks with my first child and went to the hospital within 30 minutes and was 4 cm dilated and had him the next day i only lasted that long b/c of magnesium sulfate (nasty stuff) so it could be the mucus plug and you could be having baby soon oh and after i had the bloody show i didnt feel any contractions untill they gave me the mag so good luck!!! and congrats!!!

My Dr. ruptured (or whatever) the membranes purposely to try and enduce labor, maybe they did and did not explain that. I did bleed slightly afterward. I was also on bedrest for HBP and got bumped 3 days in a row for induction. Hang in there!!!
