Never too late! It may take a little more time to learn at an older age, but you shouldn't have a problem (only if you are afraid of the water).

Everything comes more naturally to children when it comes to learning new things. That's why most toys are educational and imagination stimuli. It is also a lot easier for kids to learn many things because they are so pliable and eager, instead of concerned about what others think, or scared. Unless you are downright terrified of water, it should come easy because humans are fairly aquatic creatures. Even with phobias, it is worth busting the fear to learn.

I personally think everyone needs to know how to swim. There are three really important reasons adult non-swimmers should get on in there besides the fact that water is fun and social.

1. It is great exercise. Low impact, all over body health, relaxing. As we age and mobility issues/arthritis kick in, sometimes the only exercise we can really do well is in the water. So that is for later in life.

2. It's just good safety to know how to behave in water, to know how to at least tread water if you find yourself in "over your head" and move toward safety, even if you don't know all the strokes. In such case you need that comfort vs freakout factor, and maybe just treading and doggy paddling. But even that skill could mean the difference between life and death.

3. If you have kids or want kids...they will know how to swim, guaranteed, rarely does a kid slip by these days that doesn't swim. You will be at a disadvantage if you can't take them, play with them and supervise them, as well as save them if necessary. Even with lifeguards.

I would go on to say it is just a good civic skill, kids or no kids...anyone could find themselves in trouble. This is a different level of swimming skill, esp with adults, but if you are going to learn to swim yourself, you should go ahead and get your lifesaving class in...bonus of CPR.

Every YMCA with a pool has lessons for every age, for every skill, for every budget. There is no excuse. Have fun!
