Guppies are pretty easy to keep.
the only other thing that you might need is water conditioner. It removes chlorine from tap water. Without it fish won't last very long. All you need to do is go to a pet store (or even Wal-Mart if you want to) to get some. Add a few drops in every time you put water into the tank.
If you have any more questions ask someone at the pet store. They're usually good about answering questions.
For fish food i would say that Hikari is the best brand.
Have fun with guppies

Gravel, some decorations maybe, an air pump and an air stone, and a plant or two, wash the gravel first as there is a lot of fine particles ( dust ) when you buy it, put all the stuff in add water turn on the filter, pump, heater and wait a week or so before putting in the fish, and maybe some products to soften the water if you live in an area with high calcium in the water, ask some questions at the shop where you get your guppies

So far everything is listed in the previous posts. In a 5g tank, you can only have 5 guppies...I'd get all males so there is NO breeding. Your tank would be too small, even if you only got 1 female, as soon as she had her first brood (they have around 20-30 babies). Males have brighter and prettier tails, and they don't get nearly as big as the females do...I have seen a female be around 2in (almost 3) long! I did not know they can get that big!
Good luck with your fishies!

That's all you need. Just make sure the heater and filter are the right size and watts for the amount of water you are going to put in the tank.
You just need some gravel/sand, food (flake or live), plants (plastic or real), rocks? Ornaments?
Are you planning to put anything else with them?

A little gravel and some decor is about it other than supplies for maintainance. I would also add a thermometer to that list. Although many people find a hood with light to be a very nice addition, it really isn't required.
You should plan on a bucket, gravel cleaning siphon (from the pet store) and dechlorinator solution for your regular weekly water changes. Also a small brush, like a toothbrush, is very handy to keep in your supply bucket for general cleaning.

do you only have guppies in the tank? and depending on how big they are they will eat their babies. so you might want to buy a seperate cage to go into the tank and when the female seems pregnant stick her in the tank and take her out after she has them. i raised guppies for a while and had to do this because i have gold fish in the tank to and that was a mistake. but the guppies eat the babies to...

not something can bypass in a tank that length. you ought to get some flora and in line with possibility like a single bladder snail - attempt Petco for bladder snails, they in many circumstances hitchhike on Petco flora and in case you ask they're going to provide you some (I even have accomplished this because of the fact they don't sell them, and because they simply kill them besides they frequently comply with giving them away). Even a super kind of the different snails are too massive for that tank length. Even bladder snails are chancy in a tank this length...you will probable land up with million of them and that they'll with out delay crush your tank. So do on no account feed, and eliminate any eggs that take place.

I'd say a 20 gallon tank, because you will outgrow the tank as soon as they start to reproduce. Save the 5 for a "hospital" tank.

Thermometer to keep a check on your temperature will also be handy. Also useful to have some 'Tap Safe' or 'Dechlorinator' to add to your tank when you do your weekly water changes.
Beware: Guppies breed like rabbits
Good luck.
