Smart people don't get upset by challenging viewpoint. They know that differences of opinions are normal, they can argue their point but don't treat it personally. Closed minded, pig headed people don't accept other people's opinions. They have to prove they are "right" showing the world that they are insecure and not so smart.
We don't all want to be right. Some of us accept that we make mistakes, we are flexible enough to change our own opinions if someone makes a valid point. It's called being "open-minded".

It is because they have NOT been taught the simplest lessons of OBJECTIVE THINKING.
Objective thinkers look at all questions objectively which simply means they leave THEIR OWN PRIVATE OPINIONS out of the scene.
Example: Supposing I am a devout Catholic and am covering a story about the Pope whom I personally admire and would die to protect for slander or harm. BUT I AM AN OBJECTIVE REPORTER so I research and find:
(1) The Pope was a member of Hitler's army and served for a year in an infantry battalion.
(2) The Pope became a priest and rose to rank of Cardinal, whereapon he wrote a document called DOMINUS IESUS which stated that ALL other churches except his were DEFECTIVE.
(3) The pope refused to save thousands of people from getting aids by using free condoms, thus putting his religious dogma ahead of human lives.
Now with that information it is my job to write an editorial for my paper. So now do I BURY that information since it is against my own feelings or do I report it honestly ?
This is where OBJECTIVITY comes into question.
An objective thinking Repuplican would see the folly of the IRAQ mess but VERY FEW of us are objective so we display our own private bias to each and every question.
So sad....

The world has too much pride in it. But then again, sometimes what is being challenged is something we depend our lives on like God for example. We depend all our hopes of life after death on His existence. It is only natural we feel threatened. Competition runs in our blood and it happens everyday.

because they are egotistical jerks who cannot stand the thought of being wrong on anything! they are very insecure people with anger problems! this is why they react the way they do! which is why in america, we now have anger managment programs to help people this insucure to realize that other people have opinions, too! and to learn to respect other peoples opinions once in awhile!

I think that a lot of people hold their views (especially religious and political views) as sacred, and they feel that if anyone disagrees with them, they are committing something tantamount to sacrilege.

Nobody likes being wrong, or having their opinions questioned. The human ego is VERY fragile.
