When you was your clothes one of the biggest hints for keeping your blacks looking black is, shush don't tell anyone but its cold water and other black clothing the cold water keeps the dyes from bleeding.
When you wash black clothes with other lighter colors the fibers from the light colored clothes attaches to the black that is why we have lint brushes, but when you wash blacks with blacks then what you get is a long life with your blacks clothes.

Over my protests, the wife always washes my black stuff in hot water. They make a special black soap for use with hot water. It works. After about a year of that, if the shirts and stuff are still good she'll dye them in the washer.

Luke warm water is best for blacks, coloureds. Of always separate darks and lights. Dye quality varies and type of material varies. Some black cottons fade quickly some dont, generally speaking, the black cottons can be easily re-dyed in the wash with the appropriate dye.

Yes, your other clothes will get dingy. Wash all your colors in one load and blacks in another or, all dark colors together in COLD water. Saves the color! Learned from experience. D'oh!!!

If you use laundry detergent they will come clean no matter the temp. of the water. Hot or even warm water makes colors bleed. Eventually your black fabrics will become gray and your colors will fade.
