Does anyone, know if the book of "Midaq Alley" by Naguib Mahfouz, has something to do or compares to an event that occured in history?

It IS based on the era, but it is not necessarily true. He basically took the common plight of an impoverished area and ran with it.

Basically, if you are trying to use it as a source for the slums of Cairo.. I would find something else.

I've read that book, in college for a class. I thought it was just fiction, I don't know that it is based on something that actually happened. It might be a combination of different experiences in the authors life. I really don't know.
