Because welfare and abortion regulation enlarge the Nanny State. The more we rely on gov't the happier democrats are.

The welfare system is in place to aid families in need. Using not going to college as a choice is ridiculous. Most low income families are not low income by choice. Some people just have more advantages than others and some people just make bad choices, to say that all welfare recipients chose the situation they are in is disrespectful to the woman who's husband walked out, who was a happy stay at home mother raising two, happy, well adjusted children until her deadbeat husband walked out never to be heard from again, to working two jobs to pay the bills and pay for daycare she now needs because she has to work all while still not being able to make ends meet without the assistance of the welfare system. Government could destroy the welfare system, but that would just increase the abortion rate. Many unplanned pregnancies are NOT aborted because these women know they can turn to the welfare system for help if they need it

Two totally different subjects. A women's right to chose what happens to her own body should be her choice and hers alone. I don't believe that the government should interfer with personal choices regarding what we, men or women, decide to do wtih our bodies.

On the other hand, not everyone is born with the ability or means to go to college -- its not that they chose to skip it, its that they couldn't afford to go or perhaps didn't receive enough education about college to make an informed decision. People generally don't chose to work at bad jobs -- they just can't find better jobs. They don't chose to make little money -- generally they are born to those with little money, grow up struggling to make ends meet, and then repeat the same cycle themselves because they can't see another way out. If we ended welfare all together, we are further dooming people who started out life with less opportunities and more challenges to further hardships.

Besides, in 2000 (I don't think its changed since, the monthly TANF (welfare) payout to a family of three in New York with absolutely no income was $577, and that is the most that anyone gets.

On the other side, look at all the taxpayer money going to subsidizing state colleges (when an undergrad student at one, I was told that we were all welfare recipients since state tuitions were subsidized by the state). Add to that, all of the tax breaks that go to those with student loans or mortgage payments, or the the education credits for those in school. Check those numbers out. If we should end welfare to the poorest of the poor, then we should end all of it.

And I think our society would be a much worse place if we did.

Skipping college is not always a choice, college is incredibly expensive as it is not subsidized as it is in many other countries (a from of welfare) So students must rely upon another form of welfare (the low interest student loan) to get by. Since the only ones who can pretty much get student loans are low income persons, the ever dwindling middle class is left out to fend for themselves.

Not to mention with the rate of outsourcing one of the largest industries in America is currently the service. That is where the bulk of the jobs lie, they are not wonderful jobs. There are many university educated people serving coffee, or ringing up groceries. I am fairly certain that was not a choice.

My point is that there are always exceptions to the rule and we need to make provisions for them, or we will in the end be doing ourselves a disservice.

You are stretching a bit here. Abortion is wrong because it is the murder of innocent babies. Living with your mistake is just a result of doing what is right on the issue.

Doing what is right is behind welfare as well. It is morally responsible to insure those within a society that cannot make it on their own receive assistance. It used to be called charity until the Government got into the business. Now the system is so screwed up that it needs to be fixed, but that does not mean you do away with all assistance for the needy.

Your example of skip college, etc... Is a fine example of what is wrong with the system. I believe if you make poor choices for your life that you should shoulder the responsibility of getting yourself out of the hole you dug. If you are truly needy then you should receive assistance for a LIMITED amount of time. If you have children you should receive assistance if you are low income, but there needs to be incentive and assistance to aid people on getting out of the system

Life isn't always about the choices you made, it often about the choices someone else made for you.

What do you do for the 15 year old girl that I taught who was born toxic and thus suffered some mental health consequences from it, her crack addict mother was shot in front of her 16 times at the age of 5, her grandmother kicked her out of the house for basically being a teenager, and so she was forced to drop out of school as the foster system failed her. Last I knew she was living out of a car with a 35 year old who abused her and had impregnated her. We couldn't report it because we couldn't find her. What happens to someone like that? Did she make those choices? What is going to happen to her child?

Also the most amount of welfare money given out is in the form of corporate welfare...to business not to people.

Most people think that when someone is in need of help, it is a good idea to help them out. Most people on welfare didn't decide to get in that position. Many have children that they can't afford to take care of. So the government has systems in which they receive some help. Some do abuse the system, or have made poor decisions. But many haven't. And either way, it healthier for a society to help them out rather then let them starve.

Your argument is a little flawed. In your analogy, if someone want abortion illegal, then they would also want it to be illegal to make any decisions that could lead to welfare.

i can't help but wonder if you mean all forms of welfare.

for instance, last year when oil companies were making record profits, they were being subsidized by taxpayers - a form of corporate welfare.

we subsidize tobacco production - a form or corporate welfare.

many corporations who made contracts with their employees are now breaking those contracts and the pensions that they legally promised are being handed over to the govt - this is also a form of corporate welfare.

when the savings and loans were going to go under, the federal govt saved - meaning taxpayers - this is corporate welfare.

when chrysler was going to go out of business, they were offered low interest loans from the federal govt - this is welfare.

now the airlines, who have been featuring terrible customer service for a generation, are in trouble - the federal govt is who has been and will continue to bail them out - socialistic corporate welfare.

whenever i bring this sort of welfare up, those who are so deeply opposed to helping single mothers or children (about 40% of the people in poverty in america are children) get that faraway, glassy look in their eyes that tells me i have strayed from the script and they don't have any pre- prepared talking points to repeat to me.

i want to stop welfare too.

ALL FORMS OF WELFARE!
